Grow Your Own Biomaterial With A Bacterial Cellulose Kit
The kit provides all the materials for you to grow bacterial cellulose.
Bacterial cellulose is a biodegradable structural material produced by certain types of bacteria such as Agrobacterium, Sarcina, and Gluconacetobacter. The production of cellulose requires abundant carbon sources for growth. The most common carbon sources are glucose and sucrose. The bacteria synthesize these carbon sources to form microfibrils which further combine to form cellulose ribbons, characteristic of bacterial cellulose. These microfibrils are much smaller than those in plant cellulose, making bacterial cellulose much more absorbent. Other qualities include high tensile strength and biological compatibility. These properties have led to bacterial cellulose being used as wound dressings, artificial blood vessels, food additives, and clothing fabric.
